This year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival takes place from June 13th to the 18th and the event sees a global collection of artists and animators attend the prestigious event to showcase their works, give talks and take part in other industry events. You can’t talk animation without including Japan and this year there is a varied list of titles.

The BFI is hosting a weekend of contemporary anime films at the BFI Southbank in June. This is a regular event which collects a diverse array of anime movies and a lot on offer in this year’s programme are some of the best and flashiest to be released in recent years.
The Glasgow Film Festival takes place from 17-28 February at the Glasgow Film Theatre and there are four Japanese films that are set to be screened over that time. None of these are premieres and all of them have been on the festival circuit throughout the entirety of 2015 but if you haven’t seen any of these on the big screen then this is your chance. There are two live-action and two anime films but there are many similarities from the year made to the fact that every film has a supernatural element to it.
I have not seen any of these since three of them have home cinema releases planned for this year and I thought I can wait but I have friends who have seen them all and they have recommended The Boy and the Beast.

The programme for the BFI London Film Festival was announced last week and it has a selection of interesting titles. A lot of the features have been in festivals since the start of the year and two of them have gotten mixed reviews from critics which is disappointing if you want to see new work. The chances of some of these showing up on DVD and possibly theatrically is guaranteed which makes me wonder why I should go to the festival but… BUT… There are plenty of Japanese films so I shall refrain from complaining anymore. There are also some quality titles and two surprises. There are films not yet released in Japan and ones that must be seen on the big screen!
The ones that audiences should seek out, in my opinion, are Love & Peace, Happy Hour, Our Little Sister, The Boy and the Beast, and possibly Ghost Theatre.

This week I posted a review of the zombie manga I Am a Hero and an announcement about the wonderful comedy Fuku-chan of Fukufuku Flats.
I have been very busy at work and on the entertainment front. I watched lots of films like Lalala at Rock Bottom (2014), Taksu (2014), Permanent Nobara (2010) and Sheep in the Night (2010). My sister completed Shenmue and we started Shenmue 2 and I’m in the middle of Final Fantasy Tactics The War of the Lions.
What’s released in Japan this weekend?
Yesterday it was announced that anime films Hana to Alice Satsujin Jiken, Miss Hokusai and The Boy and the Beast are set to be shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (The Boy and the Beast is part of the Work in Progress section while Hana to Alice and Miss Hokusai are in Competition) ahead of their theatrical release in Japan in a few months’ time. The directors of the films are regulars of the festival, giving talks and getting awards. I have already written previews about Miss Hokusai and Hana to Alice (no reviews as yet) so that leaves The Boy and the Beast.
