Japanese Films at the We Are One Global Film Festival

Due to COVID-19, film festivals around the world have had to postpone or cancel events. Then, in April, Tribeca and YouTube announced they were teaming up for a 10-day online festival called We Are One and working together with other festivals to create a digital film festival.

KOTATSU JAPANESE ANIMATION FESTIVAL 2016

I write PR for a film festival that takes place in Wales. The festival has grown over the last few years and this edition has a large slate of some of the latest films. I’ll be in Japan when it takes place but I want to promote it here because I think there will be a lot for people to enjoy:

The Largest Festival of Japanese Animation in Wales Announces Dates, Locations and Select Confirmed Films for 6th Annual Instalment

The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival returns to Wales for its sixth year. Events kick off in Cardiff at Chapter Arts on September 24th before moving to Aberystwyth. Audiences at each venue will be able to enjoy a programme made up of the latest and very best in anime both mainstream and independent as well as a plethora of cultural activities related to Japan. This year’s line-up of films proves once again that Japan is the home to some of the best animation in the world and Japanese artists continue to make daring and experimental works that go beyond 3D CGI Hollywood movies.

With two venues holding the event there are different programmes available. This one covers Chapter Arts which takes place over two days and features workshops, musical performances and a marketplace.

AMV of the Week – Get A Hold Of Yourself

It’s a week to the day since the earthquake in Japan. Posting anything feels rather awkward with the ongoing crisis involving nuclear power-plants and helping refugees whilst harsh weather sets in. I’m trying to be politic about choosing music and video which do not offend or seem melodramatic.

I went with something upbeat and brilliantly edited by the master of the AMV form, Nostromo. It struck me as epic. The music is by a, quote, “upcoming UK based dance/pop/synth sensation Sugar Jesus”. I’ve never heard of him but his music is infectious.

The anime is a section of Genius Party named Dimension Bomb, animated by Studio 4C. It’s a gorgeous anime and shows the creative talent of Studio 4C.

I picked this AMV because it marks the last AMV I listened to on the day the earthquake struck.  I hope that things stabalise in Japan soon.
