From September 26th to October 02nd, people around the world can watch a selection of works that have been programmed for The Inter College Animation Festival 2022.
This is the 20th anniversary of the event and 30 schools are participating, the largest number ever. There are an exciting and varied selection of short films and music videos done in many styles, from stop motion to motion capture, 2D anime style and mixing animation with live-action.
You can view the online ones here.
The films come from student animators from a range of institutions including places like Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media and Kyoto Seika University. You can find a full list of schools and works here and you can get a preview of each work here.
There is also a selection of interviews with organisers and people from the animation industry – in Japanese.
The director of this year’s festival is Shin Hosokawa, a graduate of Tama Art University who now works as an associate professor at Tokyo Polytechnic University as well as a freelance animator. Regular readers will now that I raved about his last film, Dino! Under his guidance, the festival will be available in a cinema space. This comes after two years of streaming the event due to the Covid pandemic.
So…
For people in Tokyo, head on down to The National Art Center, Tokyo, for physical screenings that take place from September 29th to October 02nd (screening schedule – in Japanese – here). Going to the venue and experiencing the films will be a great experience because it’ll be at a cinema! It also helps the students who get to see audience reactions.
For the rest of us, we have the opportunity to watch a mixture of films online and the ones selected are all free to view. The selected works available to view are the ones eligible for the Audience Award and will also be played at the venue. For those who wish to vote, simply head to near the top of the page:

The films I have watched each have their charm points and I will be watching again and casting a vote. This is a great opportunity to watch animation from fresh talents who will go on to have an impact on the festival circuit and beyond!
Thanks go out to the organisers for opening this up and to the students for their works!
