Genkina hito’s Top Ten Films of the Year (2021)

Bear with me while I mix personal reflections and obvious observations of cinema for this year!

While 2021 saw cinemas open for longer and many festivals going ahead around the world, the Covid-19 pandemic still causes uncertainty in the market as new variants put exhibitors on edge and ready to cancel events while audiences seem to be put off going to see films that aren’t big Marvel properties. In these trying times, streaming films online is increasingly becoming the de facto way to view the latest releases for many but cinemas aren’t out for the count!

Red Post on Escher Street, Otto to chotto hanarete shima kurashi, Tomose Japanese Film Trailers – Merry Christmas Edition

Merry Christmas

The Night is Short Walk On Girl Drinks

I hope you are festive and well.

It’s my first proper Christmas with my family but I am taking time out to organise things and quickly do this trailer post. As I write this, I am waiting to hand out/receive presents and eat Christmas food. So far, I got some Japanese whiskey from Akashi, a small city I visited a couple of years ago.

In terms of films and TV, I finished watching Wolf’s Rain and I am about to start Vinland Saga and I plan on watching nine Japanese films hosted by Cinematheque Francaise – all free and with English subs! I posted one trailer post yesterday. I’ll try and do a Top Ten Films for the end of the year.

What else was released on this Christmas weekend?

I hope you are well.

Due to tiredness, I haven’t got back into writing about films although I did drop a Letterboxd review for a noir earlier this week. I’ve got end of year posts I should do but I want to play Mechcommander 2 and other video games… ACTUALLY, I did finish watching over 50 screeners for an event taking place next year! Before then…

The Witches of the Orient, Your Turn to Kill, Gunkan Shonen, Sayonara Tyranno, Shodo, Who Does the City Belong to? Japanese Film Trailers

We start this weekend by saying…

RIP Keiko Nobumoto

Keiko Nobumoto

A talent taken away too soon.

If you hadn’t heard, the news is over at Anime News Network. If you don’t know who she is, here’s an article that goes into why she was considered an immensely talented writer. In short, she scripted some of the best episodes of Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, Samurai Champloo, as well as the scripts for Cowboy Bebop Knocking on Heaven’s Door, Macross Plus, and Tokyo Godfathers AS WELL AS crating Wolf’s Rain.

It’s sad news because her writing was really high calibre stuff that other people more talented than I will do a better job at explaining why. What I will say is that Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Wolf’s Rain are all on Amazon Prime for free in the UK, so watch them if you can. Maybe in the future I will be able to articulate how good I found her writing.

What is released in Japan this weekend?
