Synopsis: Director Ryuta Hayashi is a a fourth-generation overseas Chinese whose family has deep links with Yokohama Chinatown, home to one of the largest Chinese communities in Japan with 160 years of history. Part of this history is the 1952 “School Incident” at Yokohama Chinese School, in which a teacher was expelled from the school for supporting Mao Zedong. This led to a long-lasting conflict between the school and the Overseas Chinese Association. Hayashi’s own father played a part, which he discovers after encountering a photograph of his father, a former Red Guardsman. Their story is just one of many of overseas Chinese who have been at the mercy of international politics, conflict, and the desire for coexistence.
