I’ve posted a lot of trailers about it and it has finally been released in Japan and now you can watch the first ten minutes Berserk: Golden Age I – The Egg of the Supreme King.
This the first of a trilogy of movies adapted from Kentarō Miura’s original manga and the trailer shows a siege scene (with some censoring) with the film’s main theme Aria, which was composed by electronic artist Hirasawa Susumu (Paprika, Paranoia Agent), playing out.
This clip was released online in Japan to coincide its theatrical premiere yesterday. The video was originally posted on the Gyao website for a limited time. It was also region locked so only Japanese netizens could view it but an intrepid Beserk fan has posted it on YouTube so who knows how long this will last before Warner Bros. Japan swoops in.
The film is animated by Studio 4°C and directed by Toshiyuki Kubooka who has worked as animation director on notable titles like Gankutsuou, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and the Working Through Pain Segment of Batman: Gotham Knight.
I’ve just reported this on Anime UK News so I thought I’d place it here! Thanks go out to the guys at Twitch for being eagle-eyed.
Seems that reports the series would only be a trilogy of three movies covering the Golden Age Arc were INCORRECT!
In the opening credits, there’s an of Farnese (at 9:01 in the video), leader of the Holy See’s Ceremonial Guard, a group that does not appear until well after the Golden Age Arc comes to a close.
Seeing this, it seems like WB is planning to do a longer film-series adapting a much larger chunk of the story than originally thought. Very exciting!
Thanks for the reply.
The review on the Anime News Network praises the adaptation which is “is very faithful to Miura’s manga, covering the material that appears from roughly midway into volume 4 to midway into volume 6 of the original.” It also praises the direction and characterisation but goes on to criticise the animation. Personally my reaction to the animation in the trailer wasn’t as negative.
Overall I’d like to see this.
Ah thanks god for Hirasawa Susumu’s music; he saved that trailer with the music alone. The art is horrible, the animation is slow and show no emotion (seriously, got more of an impression with the Spectacular Spiderman animation than this), the image sequence in that introduction/trailer is crappy (check the 2004 PS2 intro for comparison) – and THANKS GOD they aren’t redoing the Golden Arc alone, yay on Farnese, Serpico, Isidro and Puck, but I have to worry how they are going to fit all the arcs up to Schierke… probably they are going to cut out the insects arc and the religious arc and going to end it at the armor of Berserk. So, none of the Hawk of Light or Arab God or Fantasia Pirate arc either…
All that I can deal with (barely). But they SERIOUSLY BETTER NOT censore the final version when it comes to occident!!!!!!!! On the other hand, I still have to insist you watch the original anime, Genki. You will like it better, this thing is bound to miss a lot of important details – I don’t know how they’re going to make sense of everything in 45 minutes… it is a LONG complex story….
Okay Nadia I’ll watch the original anime 😉 I can’t see myself watching anything in the Spring 2012 season and from the look of the original I can tell I’ll like the darker and heavier animation on that much more than on the movie.
