I personally liked this film a lot as my review shows and I wasn’t alone as it was nominated for 15 Japanese Academy Awards and won for Best Actress, Actor, Supporting Actress Supporting Actor and Music Score, beating out the magnificent 13 Assassins! Just look at the talent involved:
Eri Fukatsu: one of Japan’s best actresses and the lead in the current number one film in the Japanese box office, Once in a Blue Moon. For her performance in Villain she won the Best Actress at the Montreal Film Festival.
Satoshi Tsumabuki: fast becoming one of Japan’s top lead actors with roles in films like My Back Page and Smuggler. For his performance in Villain, he won Best Actor at the 53rd Blue Ribbon Awards.
Hikari Mitsushima: she has gone from being a support in films like Death Note to proving herself a fine actress with a series of brilliant performances in Sawako Decides, Love Exposure and Takashi Miike’s Hara kiri: Death of a Samurai 3D
Joe Hisaishi: Studio Ghibli’s regular composer provided the moving musical score.
The film was also selected by the famous Kinema Junpo critics’ organization as best Japanese film of the year. The extras look very interesting especially if you’re a film buff with an hour long documentary charting the making of the film and a discussion between one of its stars and the director.
